Error: General ODBC Error SQL Server Warning Null Value is eliminated - when outputting Median summary field in Fund query

The Fund query type in The Raiser's Edge has several summary information fields which offer insights into the fund's performance. However when the Median summary information field is selected on a Fund query's Output tab to view its results, the following error message may occur:

General ODBC Error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL
Server]Warning: Null value is eliminated by an aggregate or other SET
Native error:8153
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'ID', table

Median gift is the gift amount where 50% of the gifts are higher and 50% of the gifts are lower than that amount. Median gift can be confused with Average gift. For the Average gift to a fund, select the Average Gift field under Summary for Fund in the Fund query.

This is resolved in 7.96 patch 13, released in September - October 2018 and applied to databases in Blackbaud Hosting Services. If your database is installed locally, download and install the latest version and patch, if applicable.

To view a specific fund's median gift outside of Query, follow these steps:
  1. Go to Records > Funds.
  2. Open the desired fund.
  3. Go to View > Summaries > Fund Summary.
  4. Set the desired options.
  5. Click Finish.
  6. The fund's median will appear in the top left.

Steps to Duplicate

In a sample Raiser's Edge database:
  1. Go to Query.
  2. Click New Query in upper left.
  3. Select type as Fund and format as Dynamic.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click on Output tab.
  6. Go to Summary for Fund > Median and double click to add to Output.
  7. Click OK on the field's criteria (leave blank).
  8. Click on Results tab at top or Run Now in lower right.
  9. Error occurs.
